Legal Questions and Answers

This page is general information for people in Ontario. It is not legal advice, and Law HelpLine is not a law firm. Laws and deadlines change and every situation is different, so check your own facts with a licensed lawyer or paralegal.

Is Law HelpLine a law firm?

No. Law HelpLine is an independent legal information and connection service. We do not give legal advice or represent anyone.

Do you give legal advice?

No. The information on this site is general. For advice about your situation, speak with a licensed lawyer or paralegal.

Can I send you my legal problem?

Not at this time. We are not accepting legal inquiries through this website. To find a lawyer or paralegal, use the Ontario government’s Find a lawyer or paralegal page or see our resources page.

Does using this website create a lawyer-client relationship?

No. That relationship only starts when a lawyer or paralegal agrees to act for you.

What is the difference between a lawyer and a paralegal in Ontario?

Both are licensed by the Law Society of Ontario. Lawyers can handle any legal matter. Paralegals can only provide legal services in certain areas, such as Small Claims Court, some tribunals and minor offences, within limits set by the Law Society.

How much does a lawyer cost?

It depends on the lawyer and the type of matter. Fees can be hourly, fixed, or contingency in some personal injury cases. Ask for a written explanation of fees before you hire anyone.

Can I get legal help for free or at low cost?

Sometimes. Legal Aid Ontario helps some people who qualify, courthouses have duty counsel for some matters, and organizations like Pro Bono Ontario offer free help in certain situations. See our resources page.

How do I check if a lawyer or paralegal is licensed?

Use the Law Society of Ontario’s online directory at lso.ca to look them up.

How long do I have to take legal action?

Many civil claims in Ontario must start within two years of when you knew about the problem, but there are exceptions and some deadlines are much shorter. Speak to a lawyer promptly.

I am in immediate danger. What should I do?

Call 911. Legal help can come after you are safe.

Do you cover areas outside Ontario?

Our content focuses on Ontario.
